When I first saw this image, I was immediately struck by the depth of field. Shooting with such a large aperture can be risky at times, especially if you're careless with focusing, but you've pulled it off very well in this photo. The softness certainly enhances the overall image.
I'm not entirely sure how to feel about the composition, however. It looks like a difficult shot, and working with anything living can be a matter of capturing the perfect moment. Nevertheless, I think the timing was right, and letting the angle suffer slightly was worth it.
Overall, in terms of color, lighting, focus, etc. the photo is terrific. You're obviously very capable of handling a camera. Just try to connect on a deeper level with your subjects, and that connection will show in your art.
